It’s a Bacon Kind of Day

So I noticed that both the t-shirt and the sweatshirt I pulled on haphazardly this morning were bacon themed.  Ironic since I made bacon for breakfast.

My black t-shirt states “Waffle Bacon” – a gift from a friend who was traveling in Montreal and discovered a small restaurant that serves handheld waffles, their most popular being the bacon waffle.  She knew I’d love the shirt.

My sweatshirt has this logo designed by my friend Leila of Baxtaló.  So cute, right?  Show Bacon is kind of an inside joke in my work world.  There are a few hundred contractors and vendors like me who support large conferences at convention centers around the world for a mutual client (think event planners, AV, registration and technical teams, etc.).  While we don’t all support the same conferences at the same time, there is always one constant at every show:  bacon for breakfast in the crew meal room.  Its cult following is so strong that it has it’s own name, Show Bacon, and it’s own Facebook page.  Believe me, when you are away from your family for two or three weeks straight, pulling long hours each day in the bowels of a windowless convention center, you take the simple joys where you can get them.  And Show Bacon is one of those little slices (literally) of happiness you look forward to when you are on the road.  We love Show Bacon.

So in keeping with my bacon themed day, here are some of my favorite photos I’ve taken over the past few years of some memorable bacon meals.

Bacon Jalapeno Poppers with Cream Cheese and Sun-Dried Tomatoes. Homemade by one of my friends - delish!

The Double Coronary Bypass Burger from The Vortex Restaurant in Atlanta. No those aren't hamburger buns you see; they're grilled cheese sandwiches hugging bacon, beef, fried eggs and cheese. I didn't actually eat this burger, but had to take a photo of it nonetheless. My friend ate every bite.

Fried Oyster, Bacon & Brie Sandwich from the Nottaway Plantation in New Orleans. I can't even begin to tell you how perfect this sandwich was. L.O.V.E.

Well not a bacon meal, but one of the best belts I've ever seen. Fabulous. Bacontastic! Punkin Head likes it too.

Double decker BLT from Urban Farmer Restaurant at The Nines Hotel in Portland.

Bacon Goat Cheese Lollipops, homemade following the recipe from

Pork Belly Bahn Mi from Matt's in the Market in Seattle. Sublime.

Brussels Sprouts and Bacon from MIX Restaurant in Las Vegas. Sweet and savory, bacony goodness.

Pretzels with three dips, one of which is Peanut Butter Bacon from Tom Douglas' Bravehorse Tavern in Seattle.

A test burger I made for a recipe contest - bacon with a strawberry spinach salad with goat cheese.

Punkin Head admiring Show Bacon. I love this photo because it looks like one of those 'artistic' photos that were taken in elementary school in the 1970s.

What’s your favorite bacon dish?

The last picture looks like it could be a movie poster…and very appropriate for this time of year.
